Out of Country Surgery

For metoidioplasty and phalloplasty

Metoidioplasty and phalloplasty procedures are complex and are known to have high complication rates. Trans Care BC has been working with the Medical Services Plan (MSP) to provide temporary additional options in the US. Patients still have the option of going to Montreal, Quebec.

Please be aware, there is no guarantee of out-of-country funding for surgery even if all key readiness considerations are met. This is an interim and temporary measure funded by MSP.

In order to be eligible for surgery out-of-country, patients must have:

  • Completed all required surgical assessments
  • Had a hysterectomy/BSO (if one is required for lower genital reconstruction)
  • Completed or have a plan in place for hair removal (as required by surgeon)
  • And be able to travel to the US for surgery (have a valid passport and able to enter the US)

If a patient meets these key readiness considerations, they can ask their physician to complete the ReferralForm OOC 2017.05.01 Editable>Trans Care BC Referral form for out of country metoidioplasty or phalloplasty

and fax it to the Trans Care BC care team at 604-675-7464.

Once the form is received, the care team will be in touch with the care provider and patient and put the patient on a waitlist to begin the out-of-country process which includes having a consultation with a surgeon and meeting with a trans specialty care physician to complete an out-of-country application for MSP approval.

Approval for out-of-country surgery is at the discretion of MSP. Wait times for consultation and surgery dates are based on surgeon availability. Trans Care BC’s Care Coordination Team is providing guidance to clients to access funding for surgery. In order to address the waitlist in an equitable way, patients will be attended to in priority order based on key readiness considerations and date of completed assessment. Other factors may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

We thank you for your patience as we try to support people who are interested in accessing this out-of-country option.
